2nd ICONIC Summer School
27-29th August 2018
Queen's University Belfast, Belfast (UK)
The 2nd ICONIC Summer School was held at the Graduate School of Queen’s University Belfast (UK) on 27-29th August 2018. The title for this ICONIC Summer School was “Virtual testing and design of composite structures”.
On the first day of the 2nd ICONIC Summer School, a training course in public communication was run by Channel56, following by a guided tour of the Bombardier wing facility. The second day was characterised by a career development workshop, including a LPI360 leadership skills analysis for our ESRs, and a presentation on the transition from to PhD to employment for Engineers by Steve Orr (Connect at Catalyst Inc.). Andrea Faggiani (Red Bull Technology) and Declan Nolan (Queen’s University Belfast) presented on their career experiences going from academia into industry, and vice versa, respectively. A panel discussion gave the young researchers the opportunity to ask questions on career experiences. In the afternoon, Prof. Pedro Camanho (University of Porto) presented on “Analysis models for polymer composites at different length scales”, and Dr. Michel Mahé (Airbus) gave a seminar on “Virtual Testing at Airbus – The A350 Success Story”.
On the last day of the 2nd ICONIC Summer School, Frank Kirkland (Rolls-Royce) gave an overview of virtual tools Rolls-Royce uses for composite materials, and perceived needs, and Bas Tijs (GKN Aerospace: Fokker) presented on “Virtual Testing of Composites: Adding value in the Aerospace industry”. The invited technical speakers from the 28th and 29th August participated in a panel discussion with the young researchers on virtual testing of composites, and perceived needs for further developments by industry and academia.
