1st ICONIC Summer School
4-6th September 2017
University of Patras (Panepistimio Patron), Patras (Greece)
The 1st ICONIC Summer School for ICONIC ESRs and affiliated PhD students was held at the Conference & Cultural Center and the Laboratory of Technology & Strength of Materials of the University of Patras (Greece) on 4-6th September 2017. The title for the 1st ICONIC Summer School was “Developing and characterising novel composite materials for structural applications”.
On the first day of the 1st ICONIC Summer School, ICONIC Coordinator Prof. Brian Falzon and ICONIC supervisor Dr. Peter Martin (both Queen’s University Belfast) provided a general overview of methodologies for material characterisation. ICONIC supervisors Prof. George Lampeas from the University of Patras and Dr. Giuseppe Catalanotti from Queen’s University Belfast introduced the two laboratory exercises conducted by the ESRs on the first and second day of the Summer School, high strain rate characterisation of composites using Split Hopkinson Bar method, and Double Cantilever Beam static and high strain rate testing. The second day of the Summer School ended with a guided tour at the Ancient site of Olympia and a project dinner.
On the last day of the 1st ICONIC Summer School, three invited speakers gave seminars on crashworthiness and certification of composites in the aerospace, automotive and rail industries: Dr. Naresh Sharma from NASHERO s.r.l., Domenico Fondacaro from ICONIC beneficiary Centro Ricerche Fiat S.C.p.A. (CRF), and Dr.-Ing. Jan Prockat from Bombardier Transportation. Following on the seminars by the invited speakers, the ESRs conducted transferable skills training, including two seminars by Professor Emmanuel D. Adamides on “Dual use of research results: Ethics & Implications” and “Risk awareness and mitigation strategies”, and a presentation skills training by Prof. Brian Falzon.
