ESR conducting outreach – BOGY (Berufsorientierung an Gymnasien)

By Sanghyun Yoo

I am Sanghyun Yoo, ESR 1 at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR), and a doctoral candidate at University of Stuttgart, Germany. As part of a public engagement, I participated in an activity called, ‘BOGY (Berufsorientierung an Gymnasien)’. BOGY is a compulsory activity for all high school students, who are grade 9 and 10, to find out their study orientation in Baden-Wuerttemberg area. It covers a training event to raise the pupils’ interests in their future career through a job-oriented activity.

On 25th February 2019, four students at 10th grade visited a department of structural integrity in DLR Stuttgart site. Since the main objective of BOGY is to tell the pupils about what the life of an engineer looks like. The activity involved conducting material testing that is the essence of my work. In the beginning, I explained the concept of crashworthiness of transportation structures, and the importance of material characterizations within the design of the structures. Then, I demonstrated how to prepare test specimens such as attaching strain gauges and applying speckles for full-field optical techniques. After that, they performed material testing and processed the results. Finally, students had guided tours of the facility with colleagues from the department. To sum up, I thoroughly enjoyed the activity and I wish I were helpful to them in career explorations.
