Dr. Alistair McIlhagger

Experience:

Dr. Alistair McIlhagger is the Director of the Engineering Composites Research Centre (ECRE) at UU. He has over 15 years’ experience in the development of smart/functional nano-composites and novel composite textiles for aerospace, renewable and transport applications. He is one of the founding academics in the Northern Ireland Advanced Engineering Centre (NIACE) and co-founder of Axis Composites Ltd, a University spinout company established to commercialise advanced performing and associated technologies. He is currently involved in an EU (FP7/MARINCOMP) and nationally-funded research programmes. He has supervised 7 PhD students to completion and is currently supervising 3 full-time and 3 part-time PhD candidates.

Prof. Eileen Harkin-Jones

Experience:

Prof. Eileen Harkin-Jones is the Royal Academy of Engineering-Bombardier Chair in Composites Engineering at UU since 2014. She has extensive experience in leading multi-million European research consortia in the processing and modelling of thermoplastic polymers. Her expertise is in the optimisation of processes for new materials, development of new thermoplastic composite and nanocomposite materials, and in sustainable manufacturing of polymers and composites. She has extensive experience in technology transfer to the plastics industry, winning 2 national awards for excellence in this regard. She has published over 180 scientific articles and won research funding in excess of €12M. She has supervised 30 PhD students to completion as well as 20 Master students in Polymer Science & Engineering. She is involved in the promotion of gender equality in STEM at an international, national and local level, and is the Athena SWAN Coordinator in the School of Engineering at UU. She has a keen interest in STEM education at primary and secondary school level, and is a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Education Committee.

Dr. Edward Archer

Position: Senior Lecturer in Advanced Composite Materials

Experience:

Dr. Edward Archer has research expertise in manufacturing and characterising 3D woven composite reinforcement structures and the prediction of their properties, with key aspects of the work carried out in collaboration with major companies in several industrial sectors. He has successfully completed projects for Rolls Royce on 3D woven composite structures and Irish Composites on thermoplastics. He was recently awarded a Marie Curie IAPP grant. He is Technical Director at the University spinout company Axis Composites Ltd. He has mentored two postdoctoral research fellows and one PhD student to completion.
